Medical Bioscience at Monash Malaysia

I’m a Monash Australia science student who went on exchange to Monash Malaysia in 2019. The medical biosciences course in Malaysia is NOT equivalent to biomedical science in Australia. It’s more similar to the science course. In medical bioscience you do similar units that is offered in the bachelor of science, such that you do BIO1011/BIO1022, CHM1051/CHM1052 etc. Monash Malaysia doesn’t offer anything that is similar to biomedical sciences. Medical Biosciences in Malaysia is more like a Bachelor of Science with a major in the biomedical sciences (PHY, MIC, IMM, GEN) From my experience at Monash Malaysia, it was very different to Monash Australia, the teaching quality is no where close to the Australian standard. Monash Malaysia focuses on getting good grades rather than genuinely learning the content, this results in most of the cohort cheating their way through their degree. I find that Monash Australia has various different lecturers that are experts in the field, however, Monash Malaysia there aren’t that many lecturers and there tends to be an overlap in lecturers for many units. This means that the teaching quality is drastically reduced as how can one person be an expert in so many fields of biomedical science? I took PHY2820 (The Monash Australia science equivalent of PHY2032) and it was terribly run and labs were done just for the sake of it. In a three hour lab where we were meant to be measuring our cardiovascular response to exercise on exercise bikes, instead of small groups collecting data, we had one person on the exercise bike and a class of 70 students just used that data from one person. We sat around for 3 hours just waiting for one person riding a bike. For the lab write up they just uploaded a file with made up figures so that we had varying data to analyse. A complete waste of time. Monash Malaysia will get you the degree but it won’t set you up properly for a career in science or academia.

Hi :) Thank you for the reply . Yes , I noticed that while monash Australia has a bachelor of biomed , monash malaysia does not offer that degree . Thats such a shame because my interests are more towards human biology and I’m not very keen on plants / animals biology . Would you say that most of the content in the medical bioscience degree is geared towards human bio ? One of my interests in the biomed field is also neuroscience but I dont see any core neuroscience subjects listed part of the degree , can I take that as an elective instead ( Human Neurobiology ) . I really wanted to come to australia for my undergrad :( But I figured it wouldnt be worth paying three times the malaysian fees per year just to study online since the borders are still closed as of now .

If you’re interested in human biology definitely do medical biosciences if you’re in Malaysia. From my understanding, Monash Malaysia doesn’t offer any neuroscience units. You’ll only find neuroscience at the Australian campus. Monash Malaysia’s medical biosciences follows this course structure [(click here) ](https://www.monash.edu.my/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/2418681/BMedBio-course-map-Feb-2021-Intake.pdf) these are all the units that you’ll do as part of the medical biosciences degree
